Ethiopian Journalists encounter numerous challenges including physical attacks, arbitrary arrests, threats, and online harassments while reporting on sensitive topics such as corruption, human rights violations, or political unrest.

Moreover, female journalists in Ethiopia face a double burden as they are attacked both as a journalist and as women. Gender-based violence against women journalists is a critical issue that needs attention. The situation gets even worse as freedom of the press and independent media in Ethiopia are under threat when violence against journalists goes unpunished.

Editors Guild of Ethiopia (EGE) considers the safety of journalists in Ethiopia a major program focus.

This web portal, developed with support from UNESCO, aims to monitor incidents of violence against journalists in Ethiopia. EGE recognizes that safety challenges are constantly evolving, and this dedicated portal is also designed to monitor physical and digital attacks, harassments, and gender-based violence journalists in Ethiopia face in their line of duty.
The alert monitoring portal is available in English, Amharic and Afan Oromo.
