What is Editors Guild of Ethiopia (EGE)?

Editors Guild of Ethiopia (EGE) is a membership based association founded on October 29, 2019 and registered by the FDRE Agency for Civil Society Organizations under the registrar number 4527. EGE is a non-profit, non-government and non-partisan professional association of news editors working in print, broadcast and digital media platforms in Ethiopia.

What is the rationale behind the establishment of EGE?

The Guild is established after a thorough analysis of the gap that the gatekeepers of media houses in Ethiopia have remained the least organized and represented; while they have been the most vulnerable and frontline victims of threats in the media ecosystem.

What is the source of income for EGE?

EGE operates on income generated from the annual membership fee of its members and donations from partner organizations and corporates.

Who can be a member of EGE?

At EGE, two types of membership status are available; Regular Member and Honorary Member. You can find details on ‘Membership’.

Who runs EGE?

The highest governing body of EGE is the General Assembly (formed by members of the association). The Executive Board (nine members) is the body that convenes by-monthly and oversees the progresses of the Guild. Both these bodies represent news editors in the country and members of the Board are elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term, and are working voluntarily. The day-to-day activities of the Guild are run by the Executive Director and other paid employees.
